2008 Wayne Gretzky Merlot Review

I don’t drink a lot of Merlot – but if I did I imagine I’d be a fan of this bottle.

First impressions of Gretzky Estates Merlot, wow – fruit punch. Raspberries, fig and a hint of confectionery. A nice nose overall, leading me to think this wine might be worthwhile. The moment the Gretzky Merlot hit my mouth I felt nothing but jam. Not in a bad sense mind you, not sticky smuckers, more like an artisan jam, full of flavor, full of fruit and just a little sweetness. Is artisnal jam in the wine critics vocabulary – well it is now. Jammy on the front end then it balanced out a little, subtle tannins and a nice medium finish that hinted at a citrus note. I don’t see myself buying more of this, unless the Mrs. likes it. Fruit forward wines are not particularly my cup of tea but for those who like a lot of fruit, they should try this one out. It feels well made, is well priced ($18 bucks in Quebec) and ready to enjoy.
