The first thing you notice with this bright Chardonnay is the citrus notes. Very pleasant indeed, nice way to start a relationship. Burgundy whites come from a few distinct regions, one of which (the more southerly) is Maconnais. That’s right not all great Burgundy is red. We break down the Maconnais region a bit further, by quality. From simplest to highest quality it goes:

  • Macon Blanc
  • Macon Superieur
  • Macon-Villages
  • St-Veran
  • Pouilly-Vinzelles
  • Pouilly-Fuisse (I’ll be reviewing a couple of these shortly)

Pouilly-Fuisse is by far the most well known. Today’s subject is a Macon-Villages and is probably your best bet. The quality is decent and the price much better. I paid $16 for the Blason Chardonnay sitting here beside me. Let me get to the point – I like it.

This Burgundy Chardonnay is bright, fresh, uncomplicated, simple, citrus laden and perfectly enjoyable. It is light, pleasant and makes for a lovely everyday white. And selling at a decent price doesn’t hurt. If you want to stock a few ‘safe’ whites for friends that might pop by, this would be a fine candidate. I’ll be picking up a few for just that reason.
